Self Closing Knife Hing Installation

*For these instructions I am using a generic drawing. You will have to be sure and make the cuts and measurement according to your specific hinge. We carry four sizes over in our specialty hinge section.

To start, you will need a dado blade. A dado blade can be seen below and is basically just a wide saw. For most standard knife hinges, you will use a 6" diameter dado blade that is 9/32" wide. 9/32" is a common size available pretty much anywhere that has dado blades.

Step One

Cut 9/32" wide slot at each end of the door per the drawing immediately below this step. Keep the length of the slot less than 2". Most hinges can be used for right or left hand doors and both top and bottom mounting. The diagrams below correspond to the marathon self closing knife hinges that we carry in our store, but can be applied pretty generally.

Step Two

Install hinges in door slots using #6 pan head screws or another appropriate screw. Most new hings comes with appropriate mounting screws. For easy alignment and best appearance, mount the hinges flush with the end of the slot you cut out and the edge of the door.

Step Three

Hold door in the desired position with the locating tabs against the outside corner of the frame and insert screws in the center of the adjusting slots.

Step Four

Swing the door through a full opening arc and just for best fit. Don't forget the bumpers to stop the banging!
Close
We are closed on Monday for the Labor Day Holiday celebrating the working class and the great achievements the working men and women of America have accomplished together. We are back on Tuesday shipping full steam ahead. Orders not placed by Friday at around 1pm will not go in the mail until Tuesday. The post offices are closed Monday anyway, so it won't be more of a delay than absolutely necessary on our end. Have a great weekend!

Member Chamber of Commerce

Olney, IL. Chamber of Commerce

D. Lawless Hardware is located in the small Midwestern town of Olney, Illinois. Surrounded North, East, South and West by Interstate highways, all an hour's drive away (that's 50-60 miles out here in the sticks for you city folks who drive an hour to work), I like to joke that we are "centrally located in the middle of nowhere". We like it here and we think you would too. Olney has great schools, a junior college, a hospital, 2 industrial parks, 3 recreational parks, a good-sized lake for fishing, boating, and an abundant water supply, a small local all-weather airport, and lots of fresh air and room to breath it. Like all small towns, we appreciate all our local industries, but are always actively seeking growth. So, if you or your company is considering new site locations, please check us out.
