Self Closing Knife Hing Installation
*For these instructions I am using a generic drawing. You will have to be sure and make the cuts and measurement according to your specific hinge. We carry four sizes over in our specialty hinge section
To start, you will need a dado blade. A dado blade can be seen below and is basically just a wide saw. For most standard knife hinges, you will use a 6" diameter dado blade that is 9/32" wide. 9/32" is a common size available pretty much anywhere that has dado blades.
Cut 9/32" wide slot at each end of the door per the drawing immediately below this step. Keep the length of the slot less than 2". Most hinges can be used for right or left hand doors and both top and bottom mounting. The diagrams below correspond to the marathon self closing knife hinges that we carry in our store, but can be applied pretty generally.
Install hinges in door slots using #6 pan head screws or another appropriate screw. Most new hings comes with appropriate mounting screws. For easy alignment and best appearance, mount the hinges flush with the end of the slot you cut out and the edge of the door.
Hold door in the desired position with the locating tabs against the outside corner of the frame and insert screws in the center of the adjusting slots.
Swing the door through a full opening arc and just for best fit. Don't forget the bumpers to stop the banging!
